PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recorder which can prevent generation of a sensitive material fog, a fire and the like by easily detecting an operation abnormality of an optical modulator. SOLUTION: A recording head 12 of this image recorder includes a laser light source 21 for emitting laser beams, the optical modulator 24 for modulating laser beams, an illuminating optical system 23 for illuminating laser beams emitted from the laser light source 21 onto the optical modulator 24, an imaging optical system 26 for imaging a signal light from the optical modulator 24 onto a recording medium 11, a photo detector 27 for detecting a non signal light from the optical modulator 24, a control part 28 for detecting the operation abnormality of the optical modulator 24 on the basis of outputs of the photo detector 27, and a light-shielding mechanism 22 for shutting an optical path between the laser light source 21 and the optical modulator 24 when the control part 28 detects the operation abnormality of the optical modulator 24.
