PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately start recording and update a music number at a proper position. SOLUTION: This data recording/reproducing device 10 includes an interface 40 and receives the digital data inputted via an input terminal 38. The interface 40 extracts an audio signal from the digital data and inputs it to an ATRAC(adaptive transform acoustic coding) encoder 42 and a peak hold circuit 50. A system control microcomputer 24 detects the peak value (input level) of the audio signal inputted via the interface 40 based on the output from the peak hold circuit 50. When user operates a recording button, the device is set to a standby state, and the system control microcomputer 24 starts to record the audio signal when the input level exceeds a first threshold value. When the period, after the input level becomes lower than a second threshold value which is higher than the first threshold value until the input level exceeds the second threshold value, exceeds a first prescribed period during recording, the system control microcomputer 24 determines the timing as a music spacing and updates the music number.
