PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which makes it possible to discriminate and identify lots and the like simply, rapidly and surely; its manufacturing method; and a method of discrimination and identification. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium contains as a marking material one or more elements selected from the group consisting of Y, Zr, In, Ta, W, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er and Yb and/or the particles of the compounds of the above elements concerned contained in a magnetic layer, the main component of this magnetic recording medium. The magnetic layer of the magnetic recording layer is formed by applying a paint prepared from the marking material, a powdered magnetic substance, an adhesive resin and the like. A qualitative analysis and a quantitative analysis are made by making use of the relation between the content of the marking material and a fluorescent X-ray analysis spectral intensity.
