PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use picture data stored in the hard disk or the like of a client machine in a chat system using JaveApplet. SOLUTION: A chat client being a chat program prepared as a JaveApplet is downloaded on the browser of a client machine. When picture data are uploaded from the browser of the client machine to a web server, and stored in an external storage device 24, the picture data are detected by a chat server. The chat program informs the char client in the middle of chat of the arrival of the picture data. Each chat client requests the download of the picture data to the web server in response to this. Thus, the picture data can be transmitted to each chat client, and the corresponding picture can be displayed at the display device of the client machine.
