PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adjustment method for a reference level signal in origi nal reading that restricts a time required for adjustment of reference black and white levels at application of power or the like for a copying machine or the like. SOLUTION: At application of power, an initial value for each processing and a restriction time for adjustment are set. A carriage of a read optical system is subjected to homing, a lamp is lighted and a carriage is moved to a reference white board (S111-115). A timer for adjustment time measurement is started, the reference black level is read, and this level is adjusted to become an object level. Then the reference white level is read and this is similarly adjusted to above. The adjustment is interrupted when the timer expires for that time (S116-119). The adjusted values are set as reference data. After the setting, the carriage is moved to the initial position, the lamp is put out, and an original read section reaches a standby state (S120-122).
