PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling exposure for an electronic still camera, capable of coping with photographing of a moving image without requiring photometric sequences (a step S51 and a step S52 in a figure 5) for fixing a stop value to be open. SOLUTION: The method is provided with a detection step (a step S1 in a figure 1) for detecting the luminance level of an imaging signal, a shutter speed changing step (a step S6) for varying the shutter speed (time for storing electric charges) of a CCD (4c) according to the result of detection and stop value changing steps (a step S3, a step S4 and a step S5) for varying the diaphragm aperture area of a diaphragm means 4b, so that the shutter speed lies in a range of 1/70 to 1/60 sec, so that the S/N ratio of the output signal of the CCD (4c) is optimized.
