PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter capable of improving the resilient force for pushing a pinion by imparting a set load to a shift lever. SOLUTION: This starter 1 comprises a magnet switch 6 for advancing a pinion 4 axially movable forward and backward by helical spline fitting on an output shaft 3 driven by a starter motor 2 through a shift lever part 5. The shift lever part 5 is formed of a support part 51 and a lever 52 equipped with a plate spring 52a, and the lever 52 retains a pin 52c for imparting the set load to the plate spring 52a by nipping the plate spring 52a with a lever holder 52b for housing the plate spring 52a. Since the lever holder 52b and the pin 52c are formed of metallic materials, the settable range of the set load of the plate spring 52a can be extended by using a strength increasing means by material modification or surface hardening by heat treatment or the like.
