PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for reinforcing an existing manhole, which can construct a reinforcing layer positively having a required reinforcing function on an internal peripheral surface of the manhole, in a shorter construction period and at a lower cost, and minimizes the degree of reduction of an effective internal volume, and to provide a reinforcing steel segment. SOLUTION: Acoording to the method, the plurality of panel-like reinforcing steel segments which are carried in from an entrance of the existing manhole, are abutted on the entire internal wall surface of the manhole, and both the adjacent reinforcing steel segments are bolt-connected together. Then, mortar is injected into a gap formed between the internal wall surface and the reinforcing steel segments. Each reinforcing steel segment A consists of a panel-like main body 1 having a size sufficient enough to be carried in from the entrance of the manhole, a peripheral rib 2 arranged on the periphery of the panel-like main body 1, and a bolt hole (a) for connecting both the adjacent reinforcing steel segments A. Further, a panel surface of the main body has reinforcing ribs 3 protruded therefrom as appropriate, and a bolt hole (b) for attaching an erecting fixture 6 for wires, pipes, etc., to the main body is formed in each reinforcing rib 3.
