PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture display device capable of realizing color sequential display having high color purity and high efficiency by setting the temporal numerical aperture of a spatial light modulation element to be high regardless of the size or the state of a light emitting body without making the device larger, and to provide a projection type picture display device using this picture display device. SOLUTION: This picture display device A is equipped with the light emitting body 10, a parabolic mirror 11, anamorphic lenses 13 and 14, an auxiliary lens 15, a rotary type color filter 16, a relay lens system 21 being a 2nd illumination system constituted of an input part converging lens 18, a center part converging lens 19 and an output part converging lens 20, and a liquid crystal panel 22.
