Process for operating a gas generating device comprises operating a reactor adiabatically; and adjusting and maintaining a desired oxygen/carbon ratio based on the temperature of the educts and the reaction temperature. The temperature of the educts is acquired before inserting into the reactor. An oxygen/carbon ratio is determined using comparison values and by controlling the stream of oxygen-containing educts or by controlling the stream of hydrocarbon-containing educts. An instantaneous reaction temperature of the reactor is acquired. A correction value DELTA O2/C for the O2/C ratio is determined using comparison values from the temperature difference from the actual temperature and the theoretical reaction temperature. An Independent claim is also included for a gas generating device for carrying out the process comprising a reactor (1) with a catalyst (2) for producing a hydrogen-rich product gas from educts by partial oxidation or autothermal reforming, units (6, 7, 8, 9) for introducing educts and removing products, and units (10, 11, 12, 13) for controlling the stream. The reactor is thermally insulated from the surroundings. Preferred Features: The hydrocarbon-containing educts are made from a liquid fuel, preferably methanol, LPG, natural gas, butane, propane, gasoline or diesel. |
