PURPOSE: A device and a method for controlling a defect area of an optical recording medium are provided to appropriately set a slice level detecting a defect, and to extend a defect processing block to be longer than a defect block detected by the slice level, so as to stably process the defect area. CONSTITUTION: An RF(Radio Frequency) and servo error generator(300) generates servo error signals such as an RF, an FE(Focusing Error) and a TE(Tracking Error) using electric signals output from an optical detector in an optical pickup. A block average calculator(301) calculates an average of the servo error signals during a designated time or an average time. A FIFO(First-In First-Out,302) stores the average of the servo error signals. A defect detector(304) slices RF signals to a preset slice level, to detect a defect area. A defect processor(303) decides an actual defect processing block from the servo error signals generated in the RF and servo error generator, an output of the block average calculator and an output of the FIFO, and decides a defect servo error level(TE_hold) to be processed in the decided defect processing block for outputting. And a servo controller(305) uses the servo error signals generated in the RF and servo error generator for normal area, and performs tracking servo and focus servo to the defect servo error level output from the defect processor for a defect area.
