A motion picture focus control system where video data is automatically processed to defocus components of the depicted images of a motion picture in accordance with the depicted motion of the image components. Stationary and/or slowly moving image components are defocused in the processed video data and image components moving with a greater velocity are shown in focus or vice versa. Video data representing a motion picture is processed to generate dense motion vector fields which represent the motion of pixel sized elements. Following the generation of the dense motion vector field, the pixels associated with motion vectors with a magnitude less than a selected predetermined vector magnitude or zero representing the stationary or slowly moving objects are processed by a gaussian filter to defocus the image element. The defocusing of the pixels corresponding to stationary or slowly moving image elements is carried out by replacing the pixels being defocused with weighted averages of the pixels around the pixels being defocused wherein the weights of the weighted averages are in accordance with a gaussian distribution.
