<p>A highly accurate method and apparatus for measuring the internal index of refraction of the perform (2) of an optical fiber from the refraction of a light beam (4) when it passes through the perform (2). The angle of refraction is determined from the relation between the starting position (8) from which the light beam (4) starts and the detecting position (9) where the light beam (4) is detected is determined. The distribution of the index of refraction in the perform (2) is determined based on the angle of refraction. In order to measure the starting position (8) of the detected light beam (4) at a light source (1), a knife edge (6) is scanned over the face of the light source (1). The starting position (8) of the light beam (4) is determined when the light beam (4) is intercepted by the knife edge (6) or released from the interception.</p> |
