516,936. Polyvinyl resins. I.G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. July 14, 1938, No. 20933. Convention date, July 17, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] Aromatic hydrocarbons containing the CH 2= CH- group are reacted with phenols, alkyl or substituted- (e.g., hydroxy- or halogenated-) alkyl ethers thereof, or both, in contact with a bleaching earth such as fuller's earth. The reaction may be carried out at raised temperature, e.g., at 90-100‹C.; and solvents, e.g., aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons or chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, may be present. There are specified : vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons -styrene, divinyl-benzene, vinyl-naphthalene ; phenols and ethers-phenol, cresols, xylenols, naphthols, anisole. The products may be used in lacquers and plastic masses. Those products containing free hydroxyl groups may be converted into resins, e.g., by reaction with formaldehyde. In examples : (1) styrene and phenol are reacted to give a product soluble in lacquerbenzine and drying oils ; (2) styrene and phenol are reacted to give a product soluble in dilute caustic soda, and which may be reacted with formaldehyde ; (3) styrene and m-cresol are reacted ; (4) divinyl-benzene and m-cresol are reacted to give a product soluble in benzene; (5) styrene and anisole are reacted to give a product soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons, lacquer-benzine, acetone, and esters ; (6) styrene and alpha-hydroxy-#-phenoxyethane are reacted to give a product soluble in alcohols, acetone, and benzine, and which may be used with chlorinated rubber.
