PURPOSE: Provided is a skin whitening composition containing as an active ingredient protocatechuic aldehyde which competitively inhibits tyrosinase and has whitening, anti-aging and protection effects on the skin. CONSTITUTION: A skin whitening composition is characterized by containing as active ingredient protocatechuic aldehyde represented by the formula(1). The protocatechuic aldehyde is extracted from ginseng and inhibits tyrosinase to give skin whitening effect.
