PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow the easy retrieval of the character information added to a recording medium or its recording segments. SOLUTION: The character information retrieval system and method of successively displaying respective pieces of the character information added to the mounted recording medium or its recording segments according to selection instructions and accepting the decision information to the extent of deciding the selection relating to the displayed character information and the information reproducing device having the same, in which the input of characters is accepted (step 3), the character information including the inputted characters or character stings is retrieved from the respective pieces of the character information added to the recording medium or its recording segments (steps 2 and 7) and sequential display meeting the selection instructions relating to the respective pieces of the information obtained by the retrieval is carried out (steps 8, 9, 4, 10 and 13).
