PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording medium which ensures a satisfactory reflectance even under any laser light for reproduction in the range of 750-830 nm and enables good reproduction and to provide an optical recording and reproducing method. SOLUTION: The optical recording medium has a recording layer 3 containing a cyanine organic dye and a reflecting layer 4 in this order on a light transmissive substrate 2. A signal corresponding to information to be recorded is written in the medium by irradiating the medium with laser light for recording having 770-800 nm wavelength from the substrate side to record the information. After this recording, at least part of the cyanine organic dye in the recording layer 3 is faded with light energy in such a way that the difference between the maximum and minimum reflectances of the unrecorded part to light in the range of 750-830 nm from the substrate side is adjusted to <=20% and the recorded signal is read by irradiating the medium with laser light for reproduction having 750-830 nm wavelength from the substrate side to reproduce the information. |
