Water soluble dye complexing polymers as dye transfer inhibitors in laundry detergent and fabric softener compositions

A laundry detergent or fabric softener composition comprising at least 1% by weight of a surfactant which includes a water soluble poly(vinylpyridine betaine) polymer containing a quaternary nitrogen and a carboxylate salt in a dye transfer inhibiting amount of formula (I); wherein m defines a repeating unit; X is an anion; R1 and R2 are independently hydrogen, alkyl or aryl; n is 1-5; and M is a cation; and copolymers thereof. The polymers have effective dye transfer inhibitor properties for use in laundry detergent and fabric softener compositions.
