A fuel cell system comprises a reaction vessel with a catalyser carried in it that delivers an endothermic reaction. The reaction vessel is constructed and arranged so that endothermic reactants can be supplied to the vessel. Furthermore it comprises at least a first and second heat exchanger device which are carried inside the vessel at a distance from one another. The first and second heat exchanger devices are constructed and arranged so that they can be controlled independently of each other around the heat that is transmitted from the heat exchanger devices to the catalyser. The temperature of the catalyser at different places inside the reaction vessel is variable corresponding to the locations of the first and second heat exchanger devices.
