An optical sensor detects the presence of objects within a given area. The sensor has a sensor module with a sender, a near-distance receiver, a far-distance receiver, and an electronic circuit which evaluates the signals received. The evaluation circuit compares the difference between the near-range and far-range signals, generating a third difference signal. The evaluation circuit further determines whether an object is in the monitoring area and whether it is moving or static.
