A process for the production of phosphoric acid esters comprises reaction of a phosphorous oxide halide with a polyol to form at least 60% of a monomeric halogenphosphate intermediate, reaction of the monomeric intermediate with an alcohol to form the phosphoric acid ester and processing of the ester product in a phase separator at 50-120 deg C. A process for the production of phosphoric acid esters (I) comprises: (A) reaction of a phosphorous oxide halide with a polyol to form at least 60% of a monomeric halogenphosphate intermediate (A1) in a continuous, semicontinuous or batchwise process; (B) reaction of the monomeric intermediate (A1) with an alcohol to form the phosphoric acid ester (I) in a continuous, semicontinuous or batchwise process; and (C) processing of the ester product (I) in a phase separator at 50-120 deg C in a continuous, semicontinuous or batchwise process. An Independent claim is included for a flame inhibitor composition comprising a polymer resin and the phosphoric acid ester (I).
