A steering wheel and a steering actuator (5) generate a regulating value, used with a regulating deviation (7) to determine the steering momentum on the steering wheel. A second regulating deviation (10), altered by a manipulation factor (11), is calculated, to permanently change the steering momentum in direction of straight-ahead travel and achieve good restoring behavior of the steering wheel. The manipulation factor is maintained as closely as possible to 1, and it can be varied dependent upon travel conditions and driver. The position controller (8) of the steering actuator contains at least one proportional action controller, proportional-plus integral controller, proportional-plus derivative controller, etc.
