Flocculants for oil-water separation capable of separating or flocculating an oily or aqueous component contained in an oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsion, which flocculants are: substances comprising structural units (i) -C(R1R2)C(R3X))- and structural units (ii) -(C(R4R5)C(R6Y))- and/or (iii) (C(R7R8)C(R9Z))-, wherein X is a group bearing SO3M; M is hydrogen or a metallic element; Y is a group bearing a quaternary nitrogen atom; and Z is an electrophilic group, or mixtures of compounds of the general formula: R0-Q with compounds bearing cationic groups, wherein Q is SO3M or OSO3M.
