The sheets (15) are conveyed in the printer by means of cylinders (6,7). The sheets are dried between the ink- and or varnish-applicator units by means of a multiple dryer intermediate unit (16) which consists of at least one first and second dryer unit (16.1,16.2) each possessing a sheet-carrying cylinder. The dryer units share a dryer supply unit (10) and a hot-air suction-discharge (12).
