The first stage of the crushing system consists of a disk rotating round the center axis of the crusher so that a first set of tools (18) can force material axially through the disk. In a second stage axi-rotating tools (22) receive their feed radially. The first stage uses a disk type hacker with radially projecting knife carriers as opposed to the second stage whose first and second tools (22,30,31) use relatively converging active edges and in which first and/or second tools rotate about the crusher axis. The active edges stand axially or radially or at an angle of 45 deg to radial position. The first tools of the first stage consist of impact plates, knives, hammers or pins. The second tools (30,31) consist of knives, screens (24,25), profiled plates or pins or opposed hammers.
