The invention relates to a fuel cell system, comprising a main reformer unit and a second reformer unit, a fuel cell and a reformate store. During operation, or after switching off the fuel cell system, a hydrogen-rich reformate gas is generated by means of the second reformer unit, which is stored in the reformate store and preferably fed to the fuel cell during a cold start, or during increased power demand.
