PURPOSE: A system and a method for providing traffic information using a sensor are provided to extract a region-classified traffic congestion section according to a defective level of on/off of the sensor and latitude and longitude values of a moving vehicle. CONSTITUTION: A transmitting unit(101) is installed in a moving vehicle, and generates a transmission signal. A receiving unit(102) is installed in the moving vehicle, and receives a signal which is generated in the transmitting unit(101) and is reflected from an adjacent vehicle. A GPS(Global Positioning System) receiving unit(104) is installed in the moving vehicle, and receives a signal transmitted from a GPS satellite. A control unit(103) judges whether the adjacent vehicle is closely approached to the moving vehicle using the signal received from the receiving unit(102), and calculates a position of the moving vehicle using the signal received from the GPS receiving unit(104). A wireless modem transmitting unit(105) transmits the current position of the moving vehicle calculated in the control unit(103) and a signal corresponding to the approach of the adjacent vehicle. A central receiving unit(201) receives the signals transmitted from the wireless modem transmitting unit(105). A central control unit(202) analyzes a plurality of signals received in the central receiving unit(201), maps a zone for receiving the signal transmitted from a GPS satellite, and collects whether vehicles adjacent to the moving vehicle for driving the zone are approached through a sensor. The central control unit(202) quantizes whether the vehicles adjacent to the moving vehicle are approached according to zones, and calculates a congestion section of the moving vehicle.
