PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the continuous paper feed speed by sufficiently reducing the space between a preceding paper sheet and a succeeding paper sheet. SOLUTION: A switch-back passage 17 for temporarily accommodating the paper sheets 3 onto a carrying passage 16 for carrying the paper sheets from a paper sheet cassette 4 is provided on a printer engine 2, the paper sheets 3 carried from the paper sheet cassette 4 are accommodated from a forward end side in this switch-back passage 17, and a carrying roller 22 for feeding the paper sheets 3 toward the printer engine 2 by switching back the paper sheets 3 so that the rear end of the paper sheets accommodated in the switch- back passage 17 is a forward end is provided. A paper feeder 5 is controlled so that the preceding paper sheets 3 and the paper sheets 3 accommodated in the switch-back passage 17 succeeding the paper sheets 3 are at least partially superposed in the switch-back passage 17. A jogger 42 for correcting transverse registration of the paper sheets 3 is provided in the switch-back passage 17.
