PURPOSE: A method for assigning a dynamic/static address in a DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is provided to improve the performance of a DHCP server by checking that an IP address in which a network manager is duplicated is set in a dynamic assignment and a static assignment to prevent an error operation of the DHCP server and preventing that a free IP address is wasted in the DHCP for performing the dynamic assignment in case that one DHCP client transmits a plurality of DHCP discover messages. CONSTITUTION: Configuration information is read from a non-volatile RAM when booting a DHCP server(S5), and a DHCP discover message transmitted from a DHCP client is received(S6). It is judged whether the received DHCP discover message is a discover message of a DHCP client which previously transmits an offer message(S7). If the received DHCP discover message is the discover message of the DHCP client which previously transmits the offer message, it is determined whether a previously offered IP address is provided again(S8). If the received DHCP discover message is a discover message of a DHCP client which does not previously transmit the offer message, it is confirmed whether an assignable free IP address exists(S9). If the assignable free IP address exists or the previously offered IP address is provided again, the DHCP offer message is transmitted to the DHCP client(S10).
