PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which has a function to read both sides of a double-sided original with a color image information on one side, is compact in size and can process reading in high speed, and can provide a read image that is easy-to-handle on a software because the resolution of a sheet material double-side images in the main scanning direction is equal to that thereof in the sub scanning direction. SOLUTION: This image reader is provided with a first reading means on the order of line to successively read a color image information on one side of a sheet material, a second reading means to read a monochrome image information on the other side thereof, an image coupling means to couple the image information of the first reading means with the image information of the second reading means, and an image thinning means to thin out the image information of the second reading means among the image information of the image coupled data.
