PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for a battery capable of further reducing the occurrence of short circuit between electrodes when disposing an electrode to constitute a group, and suppressing the occurrence of a micro short circuit in an extended period of use. SOLUTION: In this separator for a battery comprising a non-woven fabric, the thickness of a mixture layer in which short fibers having a length of shorter than 25 mm and long fibers having a length of 25 mm or longer are intertwined, is set to one-third as much as the total thickness or more. For the short fiber, extremely thin short fibers having the diameter of 8μm or shorter and fusion shorts fiber are contained. For the long fiber, high strength long fibers having the tensile strength of 4.5 cN/dtex or higher and fusion long fiber are used.
