摘要 439,075. Controlling variable-speed gearing; locking levers. BENDIX-WESTING- HOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE CO., Pittsburg, U.S.A. Nov. 7, 1934, No. 31976. Convention date, Nov. 8, 1933. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] [See also Group XXIX] Fluid-pressure cylinders 19, 20 for selecting and operating, respectively, gear-striking rods 16, 17, 18, are controlled through valves 28, 29, 30, 31 by a ball-mounted hand lever 24, which moves in a gate 25 to simulate the movement of a conventional gear-shifter lever. To provide a degree of sensitivity, the valves offer a progressively-increasing resistance to the movement of the lever, and the striking-cylinder 20 is controlled through a follow-up relay 32, which gives it a movement proportional to that of the control-lever. The selecting- cylinder 19 acts, through a pair of antifriction balls, to rock a selecting-lever 86, rotatable on, but axially movable with the piston-rod 14 of the striking-cylinder 20. Both the selecting- cylinder 19 and the relay-cylinder 32 are selectively put in direct communication with the atmosphere or with a pressure-air tank 21 by the valves 28 .... 31, and the relay-cylinder 32 controls two valves 98, 99 which supply pressure-air to either side of the strikercylinder 20 from a separate tank 22. The valves 98, 99 constitute the follow-up control, their single body being rigidly mounted on the piston-rod 14 of the striker-cylinder, and they are operated by a common rocker 118 secured to the relay piston-rod 96, so that movement of the latter opens a valve and the subsequent follow-up movement of the rod 14 closes it. The cylinders 19 and 32 both have precompressed neutralizing springs. The main control valves 28-31 each comprise a piston 61, Fig. 2, loaded by opposed springs 64, 65 and such that, when acted on by the pressure in the outlet-chamber 52, the piston rises, thereby releasing a spring-loaded inlet valve 49, cutting off communication with a pressure chamber 47. The load on the operating spring 64 is thereby increased. This spring 64 is operated on by the control lever 24 through a camsurface 37 on the lever, an adjustable rocker 38 and a sliding cup 66. When released, the piston 61 vents the outlet-chamber 52 to atmosphere at 45 through a port 62 in the piston which is closed, when the piston moves downwardly, by an upper seat 59 on the inletvalve 49. The follow-up control valves 98 99 are of the same construction. The striker-rods 16-18 are located in gear and neutral position by a spring ball-detent. The valve-housing 28-31 is clamped to the steering-column of a vehicle. Levers, locking.-The control-lever 24 is locked in gear positions by a spring-loaded external sleeve 70, Fig. 2, engaging the bevelled sides of the gate, which sleeve must be grasped and pulled upwardly by the operator before he can move the lever.
