<p>A character retrieving system for retrieving an object character from a set of characters comprises input means for inputting position information concerning the portion of the object character and specific information concerning the portion and character candidate extracting means (5) for extracting characters associated with the position information and the specific information from the set of characters. The thus extracted characters are presented as candidates of the object character. The character retrieving system further comprises specific character selecting means (6) for selecting a specific character corresponding to the object character from the candidates. The character retrieving system further comprises character data holding unit (7) for storing therein character data concerning characters. The character data holding unit (7) has a character dictionary containing characters and a retrieval dictionary where combinations of position information and specific information are stored. The character candidate extracting means (5) extracts characters resembling the object character from the characters in the character dictionary in accordance with the combinations of the position information and specific information.</p> |
