PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture observation optical system which can be made small to such an extent that it can be used for a cellular phone or a portable information terminal as a picture display device, and where chromatic aberration of magnification is restrained to attain high definition and a wide viewing angle. SOLUTION: This optical system is provided with a picture display element 5 and an eyepiece optical system by which a picture formed by the element 5 is guided to be observed as a virtual image without forming an intermediate image at the center position of an observer's eyeball. The eyepiece optical system is constituted by folding an optical axis by using a reflection surface in order to make the optical system compact, so that the optical axis exists on one plane and the optical system is formed symmetrically with the plane, and has a prism 3 having an incident surface 33, plural curved reflection surfaces 31 and 32 and an emitting surface 31, and is equipped with a volume hologram (HOE) 4 on the reflection surface 32.
