PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type vide display device having compact size and high contrast. SOLUTION: The video display device is provided with a polarized beam splitter for unifying light emitted from a light source unit to either one of S polarized light and P polarized light, an optical characteristic switching element for electrically and periodically switching the wavelength band of outgoing light from the beam splitter, a video display element to be a light bulb means for forming an optical image corresponding to a video signal from the outgoing light of the light source unit, and a means for irradiating the video display element with beams of plural colors successively radiated from the switching element. Light outgoing from the video display element is made incident on a projection lens and an optical path from the light source unit up to the projection lens is constituted like almost a U shape.
