PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data collection method which enables a user to collect and study ecological data of insects, plants, etc., in an actual natural environment without destroying the ecosystem or the natural environment. SOLUTION: Plural pieces of originating means 1... which originate a prescribed discrimination signal are set at collection points of respective natural things like insects or plants in a collection area. Each natural thing collector M is made to carry a portable collection means 19 which can receive the discrimination signal originated from the originating means 1 and in which ecological data of natural things living at collection points in the collection area is stored. The collector M searches the collection point where each originating means 1 is set in the collection area and turns the portable collection means 19 toward relevant originating means 1 to receive the signal, and then ecological data corresponding to the signal is converted into a picture and/or sound by the portable collection means 19 and is stored there.
