PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately position a mobile unit by providing an optical encoder that does not tend to generate noise, does not cause the output signal of the optical encoder to deteriorate, and hence has high resolution. SOLUTION: The optical encoder comprises a light source 2, a photoreceptor 7 for receiving light from the light source 2, a scale 4 that is provided between the light source 2 and the photoreceptor 7 and has a light-transmitting section 5 and a light-shielding section 6 alternately, amplifiers 12, 14, 19, and 21 for amplifying the output signal of the photoreceptor 7, and comparators 13 and 20 for comparing the signals of the amplifiers 12, 14, 19, and 21.
