PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing misfirings in a stratified charge combustion type internal combustion engine, when releasing of NOx from NOx absorbing agent. SOLUTION: When the engine runs under a low loading condition, wherein the air-fuel mixture with an average air-fuel ratio of a lean burn condition stratifies, then the generated NOx is absorbed to the NOx absorbing agent 26 which is located in the exhaust gas passage. For the purpose to release the NOx from the NOx absorbing agent 26, the air-fuel mixture with the average air-fuel ratio of the lean burn condition is changed by shifting the lean burn condition to a rich burn condition, and weakening the movements of swirling streams being generated in the combustion chamber.
