PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a master and slave shield excavating method capable of easily progressing a slave shield without excessively increasing a hard process, and to provide a segment to be used for the same. SOLUTION: In a master and slave shield excavating method of starting a slave shield 3 from a master shield 1, a different diameter connecting segment 22 for resisting reaction force for connecting a master segment 10 assembled in the master shield 2 and a slave segment 11 to each other is previously formed, and the different diameter connecting segment 22 for resisting reaction force is assembled in a terminal end of the master segment 10 assembled in the master shield 2, and the different diameter connecting segment 22 for resisting reaction force starts the slave shield 3 while receiving the reaction force.
