PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read a read region of a target in an original by a main scan at an optimum exposure time, related to an image reading device which optically reads the image of the original, a recording medium in which an image reading program is recorded which makes a computer control the image reading device, and a data structure for computer program signal transmission. SOLUTION: An imaging means photoelectric-converts the light transmitting the original or reflected on it after emitted from a light source to generate a signal electric charge. A feature extracting means pre-scans through the imaging means under a prescribed condition so that a brightness feature is extracted from every scan range containing the read region to be main-scanned. An exposure time deciding means decides the exposure time for each scan range at the main scan based on the features extracted by the feature extracting means. An image read means main-scans for each scan range for the exposure time decided by the exposure time deciding means through the imaging means for reading an image of the original.
