The comminution unit (6) shreds metal-containing plastic waste. The sorting unit (7) then separates coarse objects and a separator (22) removes metals from the coarse stream. Recycling equipment returns the coarse metal fraction into the separator (7). A reversible diverter selectively feeds the coarse stream into circuit closed by the recycle unit, for additional comminution. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding method of treatment. Preferred features: An additional comminutor is located in the closed circuit. The recycling unit is connected by its outlet to the comminutor, supplying it with the recycled side stream. The diverter has a path to a storage region for coarse fraction. Provision is made for storage and through flow to two exits, with different conveying speeds to each. The storage zone is sufficiently large for coarse fraction from the separator which is fed back into the product stream. The bypass unit (17) is a reversible belt conveyor. The metal separator removes magnetic- and/or non-magnetic metals. For sorting, an air classifier is employed. It is adjusted to carry over a non-negligible, finer fraction with the coarse material.
