A process of reactivating a deteriorated catalyst containing phosphorus and molybdenum suitable for use in the production of methacrylic acid by vapor-phase oxidation of methacrolein or vapor-phase oxidative dehydrogenation of isobutyric acid which process comprises treating the catalyst with a gas containing a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound.
