PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a variety of paper sizes at low cost and enhance controllability in setting paper sizes. SOLUTION: A rotating member 20 journaled to the bottom of a paper feed tray is provided with a stepped channel 23, which is so formed that when the rotating member 20 rotates, the partial linear portion SL1 of the channel 23 overlies a slit 12 in the tray. When the end face of the tray is moved, a selector gear 20 will not rotate in the portion SL1. Two paper sizes, B4 (vertical) and legal, are set within the portion SL1. When the end face of the tray keeps the rotating member 20 in the position shown in the figure and a series of sizes are preset as a series of AB sizes, then the paper size can be determined as B4 (vertical).
