PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing unit and method, and a storage medium that can reproduce smoother gradation changes, when conducting pseudo- medium tone processing. SOLUTION: A dot pattern, corresponding to a gradation of each input pixel subjected to quantization, is selected from among dot patterns generated depending on each quantization level; the input pixel is converted into an output pixel block, consisting of output pixels whose gradation is binary on the basis of each input pixel position and the selected dot pattern; and an error between the gradation for each input pixel and the gradation expressed in the output pixel block resulting from converting the input pixel by the conversion means is dispersed to other input pixels located in the vicinity of the input pixel.
