PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an interface unit that monitors a hardware set itself making transmission so as to detect a fault with high reliability and to provide a cell switch unit. SOLUTION: An ATM transmitter halving a cell switch unit 10 conducting cell switch control in the asynchronous transfer mode and the interface unit 20 that is connected to the cell switch unit via a connection line 30 and transmits/receives data to/from the cell switch unit via the connection line 30 through hand-shake communication, is provided with a fault detection circuit 50 that uses a signal not steadily changed in the hand-shake communication to generate a signal steadily changed so as to detect a fault of the connection line 30 on the basis of the generated signal that is steadily changed.
