PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that obtains a suitable image signal for application of detecting perforation, in addition to a usual image read operation of the image reader. SOLUTION: The image reader, that is provided with a main scanning means that applies photoelectric conversion to a light of an original which is an image read object by each color component to generate an image signal in the main scanning direction and with the sub scanning means, that relatively moves the original and the main scanning means in the subscanning direction and reads an image of the original, on the basis of the image signal in the main scanning direction sequentially outputted from the main scanning means, by accompanying the relative moving based on the sub scanning means, the image reader is provided with a control means that picks up a sub image signal for detecting perforations or for controlling the focus during a main scanning sequence.
