An adaptive equalizer of a receiver comprising a timing detector (101) for detecting the timing suitable for adaptive equalization by using a first unique word, a timing adjuster (100) for extracting a received signal sampled at the detected timing, a CIR initial value estimator (103) for estimating the transmission line impulse response initial value by using the first unique word, a CIR initial value setter (104) for setting the transmission impulse response initial values according to the estimated initial value, and an adaptive equalizer (102) for determining the interval between the first unique word and a second unique word disposed behind the first one, judging whether or not there is a timing slip when each initial value is used, and determining a judgment value by using the transmission line impulse response initial value that causes no timing slip and the extracted received signal.
