A COMPUTERIZED METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR A SECURE ON-LINE TRANSACTION USING CARDHOLDER AUTHENTICATION

A computerized method and system for a secure on-line transaction using cardholder authentication. In one embodiment, the identify of a cardholder (110) is authenticated before an on-line purchase transaction by using a username and password combination. A record of this authentication event, along with other information, is recorded in a cardholder authentication record (100) located in a database (100) at the payment card-issuing bank (100). This authentication information is later matched with information from a merchant acquiring bank (130) in a payment authorization request to authorize payment to a merchant (120). The advantages of this method and system includes decreasing the need for issuance of digital certificates, maintenance of customer loyalty reward programs, ability to use on-line purchasing sites that require use of one credit card number, and providing a secure on-line transaction with minimal complexity to the merchant and other trasactional entitites.
