The invention relates to a motor-powered portable grinder (10), especially an eccentric plate grinder, having a work spindle (13) mounted in a machine casing (11) and a rotatable grinding plate unit (15) driven by said spindle to perform an eccentric movement. The portable grinder (10) also has a first ring-shaped pitch surface (30) that, together with the grinding plate unit (15), surrounds the eccentric axis (19) and a second ring-shaped pitch surface (30) assigned to the first pitch surface, the central axis of said second pitch surface extending coaxially relative to the central axis (17) of the work spindle (13) and the first pitch surface (28) being able to roll on said spindle. The second pitch surface (30) is rotationally mounted about its central axis. A braking device (35) is assigned to said second pitch surface by means of which rotation of the second pitch surface (30) about its central axis can be selectively stopped for forced drive or can be released to enable freewheeling.
