PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend the life of a friction plate by preventing partial wear of the friction plate in an automatic tensioner having an offset tension pulley. SOLUTION: The automatic tensioner comprises a fixed support shaft, a swing arm with one end turnably supported on the support shaft and the other rotatively urged in the direction of a belt, a tension pulley turnably supported on the other end of the swing arm in an offset relation to the support shaft and placed into contact with the belt, a friction plate disposed between the one end of the swing arm and the support shaft to apply turning resistance to the swing arm, and a torsion coil spring disposed between the one end of the swing arm and the support shaft to apply rotative urging force to the swing arm and to increase the contact pressure between the friction plate, and the one end of the swing arm and support shaft. The friction plate 5 is disposed between one side 23 of the one end of the swing arm 2 and the torsion coil spring 4. A thrust plate 19 for receiving a load resulting from the offset arrangement is disposed between the other side 28 of the one end of the swing arm 2 and a radial flange 6 raised on the end of the support shaft 1.
